Rational Approaches to Diabetes Management Diet: A Comprehensive Review
Considering the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes, it is crucial to adopt rational approaches to diabetes management diet. The optimal dietary plan for diabetes management should be based on the latest evidence, considering the individual's nutritional needs, health status, and lifestyle.
Background: Importance of Dietary Planning in Diabetes Management
Thinking about greater adherence to dietary planning, it is essential to be aware of all nutritional strategies and dietary prescriptions available in the literature, and of which of them is the most efficient for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A search was carried out in 2023 for randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and guidelines in the field of diabetes management.
Integrating Nutrition as a Whole-Person Approach in Diabetes Management

Healthy eating is not the only thing that impacts blood glucose. It is essential to understand and provide education on how other elements of daily living impact healthy eating as well. These include physical activity, stress management, sleep, and medication adherence. A holistic approach to diabetes management should consider the individual's whole-person needs, including their physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Macronutrient-Focused and Calorie-Restricted Diets
Two strategies that are often proposed for the nutritional management of type 2 diabetes include caloric restriction with the specific goal of weight loss and/or managing macronutrient balance to reduce glycemic excursions. However, a rational approach to diabetes management diet should consider the individual's nutritional needs and health status, rather than simply adopting a calorie-restricted or macronutrient-focused diet.
